Story Structure for Documentary
Story Structure is a powerful tool that will help your
documentary become the rich and dramatic film it deserves to
be.
Christopher Upham is a seasoned instructor in the art of
applying Story Structure to the Documentary Form.
Class concepts include:
The Three Elements of Character
How to reveal your character's inner life and mode
When to present the Story conflict
Three Act Structure
Theory of Rising & Falling Action
The Hero's Journey
Review of student work (Bring rough edits and footage to class)
Examples of award winning documentaries
The course is on Saturday from 10am-7pm, Cost is $195
There is an optional second day on Sunday to schedule Private

Instructor Bio: Christopher Upham is a
screenwriter,producer, actor and director. Trained as a lawyer,
he has worked in the film business since 1979, most recently as
a writer of feature films and the documentary FORT ORD for the
US Army. He has acted professionally in over 50 films and is
featured in Larry Clarks Cutting Horse.
Script consulting clients include playwright John O'Keefe
(Shimmer, Bronte), Lynn Hershman-Leeson (Conceiving Ada,
TEKNOLUST) Ellen Perry (THE FALL OF FUJIMORI), Taggart Siegel
(THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN) and Charles Schwab. Mr. Upham is
on Staff at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers Screenwriting
program. He also teaches workshops in Screenwriting, Visual
Storytelling and Finding the Story in Documentary Films.
Mr. Upham is currently directing a feature length documentary
film, RETURN to DAK TO, about veterans returning to Vietnam, and
producing "Ten Minute Movie Talk", a series about the craft of
movie directing for PBS with Producer Tamsin Orion.
