Aron Ranen Trains
Cowboys...and Indians!

AC
As many of you know, I have
spent years training the US
NAVY Combat Camera Teams.
Last week we changed it up a
bit.....Teaching a workshop
for the Couchiching &
Sien ne
River Bands of Canada.
These are descendants of the
First People's of North
America.
Located on an Indian
Reservation in Fort Frances,
Canada, they spent six days
learning and crafting
documentaries about their
lives.
Below is link to an article
from last week's Fort
Frances Times, where the
students discuss my teaching
style, and their workshop
experience.

Links to two of the short
documentaries completed
during the workshop. None of
the students had made a
documentary or used Final
Cut Pro before this class.

Tips for Using the Canon
HFS10 HD Tapeless Camera
|
Get the Canon HFS10 Model
Don't Buy the
"SD Card-Only" Version

At the workshops we have
been
using the new Canon HFS10 HD
Camera that sells for around
$1,100.00. It is the
perfect replacement for the
HV30 or HV40.
Do not buy the slightly
Cheaper HFS100 camera that
only records to an SD Card.
It is
sluggish when you are
transferring clips and
trying to Log and preview
Clips at the same time...which
is flawless on the HFS10
camera.
The image quality of the
Canon HFS10 is not as good
as the $3,000 Canon or
Panasonic cameras, or even
pricier Sony EX series,
but it is decent enough to
get started with..and serves
the purpose for in-house
corporate
training/communications and
Web Video.
Are the cameras and format
as good as the HV30 or HV40
Canon HDV Cameras?
There are many opinions and
tests,
the article at this link,
makes a compelling reason
for the HDV format over the
AVCHD Cameras (HFS10
& HFS100)...BUT,the
ease of Transfering your
footage makes the new
Tapeless AVCHD cameras a
tempting purchase.To
the naked eye, it is hard to
tell the difference.
Lincoln Dunn, a
communications director and
former student, has made a
test comparing the HFS10
with the HV30 cameras.
Both
cameras were set to
automatic and filmed approx
the same images...not
a perfect/scientific
test..but..WATCH
IT IN HD..then you judge for
yourself.

When watching the test...be
sure to click the HD button

THE FIRST HEADACHE TO AVOID
The Problem:
Your Clips are coming in as
HUGE FILES..TEN TIMES
the Original Size, taking up
space on your Hard Drive.
The Solution:
Correct the Preferences
settings in the Final Cut
Pro Log & Transfer Window.
STEP ONE:
Open Log & Transfer Window

STEP TWO:
Find the little icon with
the
Widget and down pointing
Arrow

STEP THREE:
Click on this and select
PREFERENCES

STEP FOUR:
CONFIRM THAT
AVCHD SOURCE WILL TRANSCODE
TO APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC
(as pictured below)

Your preferences SHOULD NOT
look
like the ones below.
Using the Canon HFS10 or
HFS100, there is no reason
to select the ProRes Option.
Problem solved!
|
DON'T UNPLUG THE USB from
the CAMERA.

Until after you have closed
the program, and properly
ejected the external
Camera/device.
IF YOU UNPLUG IT BEFORE YOU
EJECT IT, all your clips
will disappear from the
internal drive or SD CARD...
The camera's
viewfinder will have text
message that there are NO
SCENES on your camera....
this will be an EMOTIONAL
event for you...I
FEEL your PAIN....so does
the software maker
Shedworx.
This SHEDWORX Software will
rescue your "LOST" FILES
from Tapeless cameras

The $35 program will allow
you to extract these files
off your camera and SAVE THE
DAY!....It works, we tried
it and we had our HD clips
transferred and back inside
the Final Cut project.
They win the "I SAVED YOUR
ASS" Software Award of the
Year.
