Indoor Light is RED and Outdoor Light is BLUE.

  • Are you filming someone near a window?

  • Do you need to add light to an outdoor interview?

If you add lights to a room with exisitng daylight..your subject may turn red.

How do you add light to a indoor mixed light situation? (Daylight coming in window)?

The easiest way is to simply add 1/2
blue gel BLUE GEL ( 1/2 CTB Gel ) on your lights. You can see the examples to your right, and below modifying an on-camera light.

2 sun

Think of BLUE GEL (CTB) like

led VISINE..it gets the red out.

It corrects your indoor RED lights to match the BLUE color Temperature of outdoor light.

CTB Gels (Color Temperature Blue) come in different "thickness or strengths" 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and Full.

I use 1/2 CTB in indoor settings to help warm up my subject. With the 1/2 CTB I am letting some of the RED spill out from the light...think of it like an inferior form of Visine..it only get's some of the red out..

If you use a Full BLUE Gel (full CTB), it may reduce the amount of light coming from your unit...you need a powerful light to use Full Blue. An Arri 650 or stronger.

In summary, always use CTB on your indoor lights when shooting in a room or place that has dominant daylight.

It's Getting Hot in Here

But these Big Lights create Heat..especially indoors..,,and what if you need a PORTABLE battery powered Light source for OUTDOOR Location shooting?

Here are some popular lights that do the trick..They m
dtcix elegantly with daylight...can be dimmed and warmed up.

You can rent these at most video/lighting/film renta
l house.  Call DTC in San Francisco to help locate a place near you and purchase the Gels and lights mentioned in this article.

Childrens Toy becomes HOT new Lighting tool for moving image Professionals led

The new hot item for adding light to outdoor interviews or indoor mixed light scenes... is actually a cool light that gives off very little heat,

LED panels and on-camera LED lights are increasingly popular, and can be rented in most major cities.

As you can see below, the LED panel provides a nice clean Spot or Flood Light (request which one you want prior to renting).  It'sled bulbs dimmer is effective, and makes for fast set up.

A couple of these could help light a cooking show in a daylight filled kitchen, or for filming a documentary inside a hut at a refugee camp....these will make your images sing....perfect for interviews at sporting events or outdoor docume
led batteryntary.

You can power it with a battery...the same V-mounted battery found on many professional Video cameras.

Pictured on the right is the battery mounted on the rear of the light..the round knob is the dimmer.

The NATIVE color balance/Temp for this light is DAYLIGHT.

These lights come with pre-cut Plastic CTO (red/orange) gels. These are used to change the color temperature to INDOOR to use these Light panels with traditional lights such as an Arri 650 or Lowel Omni lights.

These CTO gels can also be used to "warm" up the image.

Pictured below is a CTO gel on half the light.

Imagine using a couple of these outdoors...sweet!

They may be DIVAs..but they sure don't act like 'em

diva

The Diva light is a compact version of the Larger KINO lights.  easy to stack and carry...light on the wallet...they add faux daylight with a soft even light.

They can be dimmed without effecting the color temp too much (lights tend to go 'Red-Warm" if dimmed), these stand up to

the dimmer anddiva front maintain much of the original color temp of the installed bulbs ( you choose DAYLIGHT or INDOOR BULBS..or mix 'em up).

You can "mix" Red/Orange florescent -type Bulbs (CTO) with Blue (CTB) Bulbs and warm your subject up.

Most Diva kits come with one set of bulbs that are daylight and one set that is for indoor light.

I Hope Batman never catches this JOKER

joker 1This light runs hotter than the two lights already discussed, but is one of the most trusted daylight balanced lights in the industry. It is called THE JOKER and pictured here is a strong 800 watt Joker.  I would use a small  Chimera softbox with this light for best effect. During my time as a cameraman for E! Entertainment in Los Angles we often used this for outdoor interview sets ups.

It comes with a nice big battery ..what could be better than a portable chimera that you could even drag out to the desert.

Anatomy of a shot...lights & Gels I used to create this image

As you can see in the shot of the Doctors, they are in front of a window (which we darkened using ND9 GEL directly on the window)
and are evenly lit.  Here is my set-up...

I had a 650 watt Arri light bouncing off a large wh
ledite piece of foam core from Underneath them (a good trick for beauty shots- notice no shadows on their necks).

My key lights were Two 650 watt lights on Chimeras and One 500 watt thru a Chimera.
3 key lights total.

All my key Lights and the Backlight had 1/2 CTB Gels in front of them.

My backlight was a 300 watt Arri on a dimmer hanging behind them on a c-stand..

A 650 watt Background light spots the Microscope in the background..I did not color correct that background light with CTB...that is why it looks "warm" on the rear wall.

It did start to get HOT IN THERE...it might have been a good occasion to experiment with  DIVA lights..it may have been more comfortable....with plenty of light to make the client happy.

Next time.......

Summary

  1. Indoor Light is Red/Orange (CTO gel means color temp orange)
  2. Outdoor Light is Blue (CTB- color temp blue)
  3. Use Blue Gel ( 1/2 CTB) on lights if you are shooting in Daylight, indoor and outdoor.
  4. Low heat lights are Kino "DIVA" lights and LITE PANELS (Light Panels can be battery operated..DIVAS can not)
  5. The JOKER is a great portable battery or AC powered Daylight balanced light. Use a Chimera with this light.
  6. Use ND9 Gel on windows to cut down light in background
