While others have been in Quarantine, I have been up and down the West Coast the last few months covering stories that were terrifying and heartbreaking, but amazing to witness. Below is a link to samples from my journey. I've included "Behind the Scenes" material to illustrate process of creating strong material, and staying safe.  I hope you are healthy like myself, and are looking forward to a better 2021.  Aron Ranen Lead Instuctor DVworkshops

Using  Present  Tense  Filmmaking  to  hold  your viewers  attention

What is a "Present Tense" Video?

It's when your video appears as if it is "live" and unfolding as you watch.

Example:
An Investment Bank needs to create series of
"White Paper Videos".
In the past their subject experts have read off
a teleprompter..straight to camera.

The videos have important info, but they
drag and tend to bore viewers, who in fact could benefit .

Picture
How do you create a present tense video out of that?

The Answer:
Turn it into a "Present Tense" business tv-talk show style. The same subject expert sits with a knowledgeable host/business journalist.

They are on high stools, with the firm's trading floor in the background.

Both are having a lively, unscripted discussion about the same material, even bringing in power point slides.

The video emulates a "live Bloomberg News" segment. It's easily digestible by the firm's clients because the info has been molded into a presentation style they would watch on TV.

The background is very important. We are not filming in a conference room. We chose a backdrop that adds credibility to our message.

Think how you could morph some of your informational videos into a more dynamic approach using "Present Tense" filmmaking.
  • filming an appearance on a radio program.
  • a walk and talk thru the streets of Hong Kong or the Cubicles of a Human Resource Firm.
  • go on a Journey with the subject...Automotive expert is interviewed while walking around a car show.

Present Tense for Corporate Video

I use this "Present Tense" approach in both my documentaries and corporate videos.

Tasked with creating a series of videos that examine state of the art Data Centers.

I turned the material into a TV style video, walking the host and expert thru the actual data center. Instead of a boring talking head in front of a green screen. They are in the actual space, pointing our details (similar to the PBS TV Show "This Old House")

VOGUE &
VANITY FAIR GO PRESENT TENSE

It's not just me that's using this
technique...check out this Vanity Fair video made in collaboration with Vogue.

Instead of the typical DSLR talking head shot (out of focus soft background), this is a hand-held camera shooting POV.

If it was produced in a standard sit down interview..with B-roll laid on top ..it would seem dead compared with this. Click here to watch the video

Next time you have to create a video...think about using "Present Tense" filmmaking to engage your viewer for a longer period of time.

Creating a "Live" show is much better with at least two camera angles.
The S
witcher Studio App, (which ranges from $29 to $49 per month-per device) is a great solution for business communicators that don't want to spend $20K on new gear and training to produce Present Tense Videos.

It acts like a mini tv studio, you use the iPad as a camera and "camera- switcher". This will allow you to choose which camera & graphics you want to display to your viewer. The other iPhones act as cameras, and can easily be mounted on a tripod.

In theory one-person could shoot and "switch" the entire episode, pre- placing other cameras before the show.

Features include:
  • Bring guests onto your show with 2-way Video Chat (Team Members in London can even get involved!)
  • Schedule YouTube and Facebook Live videos so followers get auto-reminders
  • Share videos with Facebook Crossposting
  • Go live with Office 365’s Microsoft Stream
  • Set up RTMP remotely and auto-sync with app to stream to Twitter, Twitch, and more
  • Display scores alongside live sports with Scoreboard extension

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS:
  • Gain an admin account for your organization:
  • Invite authorized users
  • Set special permissions for each user
  • Upload brand assets for your entire team
  • Integrate with Facebook’s professional tools:
  • Produce Facebook Branded Content
  • Claim content with Facebook Rights Manager
  • Share videos with Facebook Crossposting

Interview  Techniques  for  Video  Production

8/27/2018

The most important part of interviewing someone is listening.  It allows you to build your questions from people's answers, creating more authentic material.   Some of the techniques I use are included in the clip below.  They Include:
  • Ask open-ended questions, no questions that can be answered by a "yes" or "no"
  • Build your questions from Answers
  • Repeat the "Last 3 words" of a person's answers, instead of going to your next question.
  • Ask "Contrast & Compare" Questions
  • The last question should always be "Is there anything that I have not asked that you would like to share with me?"
  • Record "Room Tone" at the end for at least 60 Seconds. (ambient room noise with no-one talking.
